New Postcards for America’s 250th Anniversary

Christopher Arndt |

We’re getting closer—just one month away from the start of America’s 250th anniversary!

Today we’re adding eleven new postcards to the collection.

Are you ready? Let’s take a look...

To kick things off, we have a fun one: the lyrics to Yankee Doodle, paired with Archibald Willard’s famous Spirit of ’76 painting, which debuted at the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia.

Did you know the song dates back to the Revolutionary War—and was originally sung by British troops to mock the colonists? That is, until Americans claimed it as their own.

Next up are a few of the most beloved American songsMy Country ’Tis of Thee, God Bless America, and America the Beautiful.

  • My Country ’Tis of Thee dates back to 1831 and was once sung as our national anthem
  • America the Beautiful grew from a poem written after a journey to Pikes Peak in 1893
  • God Bless America was introduced by Irving Berlin in 1938 on the eve of World War II.

While each comes from a different moment in history, they all capture something enduring about the American spirit.

We also have the classic image of Betsy Ross, from Jean Leon Gerome Ferris’s well-known painting.

While historians still debate the details, the story of Ross sewing the first flag has become a lasting American legend.

Speaking of the flag, we’ve added two Pledge of Allegiance designs.

Same words, two very different settings. If you grew up reciting the pledge each morning, the classroom version may feel especially nostalgic.

To round things out, we created a few designs that celebrate the classic red, white, and blue.

A little baseball nostalgia, a bit of rustic charm, and a classic collegiate style:

And finally, Lady Liberty. Since 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood in New York Harbor, welcoming those arriving in search of a new beginning. The words at her base—“Give me your tired, your poor…”—have echoed that promise for generations.

As we gear up for the 250th next month, these postcards are a fun way to celebrate this historic occasion.

Pick your favorites, send them far and wide, and get ready to celebrate—one mailbox at a time.
