Originally intended for leisurely strolls for the wealthy in their carriages along the shores of Lake Michigan, the drive took on a different role as the age of the automobile dawned. Today, Lake Shore Drive is a 15-mile urban expressway running parallel alongside the shoreline of Lake Michigan to the north and south of the City of Chicago.
