Route 66 Turns 100

Route 66 Turns 100

Christopher Arndt |

In addition to the USA’s 250th anniversary this year, there’s another milestone worth celebrating — the 100th anniversary of Route 66!

We’ve created a few special postcards just for the occasion, including this brand-new "I ❤️ RT66" license plate postcard:

Did you know?

  • The “Father of Route 66,” Cyrus Avery, was a Tulsa businessman who fought to route it through his hometown and dubbed it the “Main Street of America.”
  • Route 66 winds through eight states (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California) — and crosses three time zones.
  • Author John Steinbeck gave it its most famous nickname, the “Mother Road,” in The Grapes of Wrath while telling stories of families heading west in search of hope.
  • When Route 66 opened in 1926, only about 800 of its 2,400 miles were paved — the rest was gravel or dirt until 1938!
  • Get Your Kicks on Route 66 was written by Bobby Troup while driving the highway himself in 1946 — and first recorded by Nat King Cole.

Alongside our new releases, we’re also bringing back Route 66 designs we’ve retired over the years. Now the complete collection is available once again — each with a special 100th Anniversary banner marking this once‑in‑a‑century celebration.

Celebrate 100 years of Route 66. Grab your postcards today and send a little cross‑country adventure through the mail!
